national-lacrosse-league-power-rankings-week-12

It was the 12th weekend of the NLL season and we are getting more of the same results. In other words Edmonton, Buffalo and Rochester continue to win over all opposition. Edmonton got their 10th win in a row when they ran all over the Calgary Roughnecks on their way to a 15-7 victory. Buffalo defeated the Colorado Mammoth 12-9 for their 6th straight win at home and the Rochester Knighthawks won two road games by defeating the Toronto Rock 17-12 on Saturday and the Philadelphia Wings 11-7 on Sunday. In the only other game of the weekend the Toronto Rock salvaged a weekend split and distanced themselves from the Minnesota Swarm by defeating them 9-8 in overtime on Sunday. At least we know that one of the top two teams will lose next weekend. The Buffalo Bandits travel to Edmonton to meet the undefeated Rush in the “must see” game of week 13. Read on to find out more and to see how the results affected the Power Rankings.

Edmonton Rush
10-0
Five out of 8 ILIndoor writers picked Edmonton to lose this week in their game against the Calgary Roughnecks. No one believes Edmonton is going to run the table this regular season and recent play of both Edmonton and Calgary made it look like Edmonton would taste defeat on Friday’s battle in Calgary. The Rush had won close, low scoring games over the last few weeks and were meeting the highest scoring team in the NLL on their home floor in Calgary. The Roughnecks laid a whooping on the Toronto Rock to avenge an earlier loss the prevailing logic was that Calgary would do the same to Edmonton. Boy, were we wrong. From the opening quarter the Edmonton Rush dominated the Roughnecks as they cruised to a 15-7 victory for their record extending 10th win in a row. Next week the Rush will get a great test when they host the East division leading Buffalo Bandits.

Buffalo Bandits
8-2
The Buffalo Bandits continue to roll along atop the East division by defeating the Colorado Mammoth 12-9 – the same score they defeated the Minnesota Swarm by last week. Mark Steenhuis had another good game for the Bandits with 3 goals and 2 assists. The Bandits would love to be the team that ends the Rush’s 10 game winning streak when they travel to Edmonton next week. After Edmonton the Bandits go to Minnesota for a Sunday.

Rochester Knighthawks
9-3
The Rochester Knighthawks got 17 points from Cody Jamison in their two victories this weekend. On Saturday the Knighthawks defeated the Toronto Rock 17-12 in a game that was a virtual repeat of their 17-9 victory exactly a month ago. This time the Knighthawks were down 9-4 late in the first half with Angus Goodleaf playing in relief of Matt Vinc who was pulled after allowing 8 goals on 14 shots. Cody Jamison led the Rochester comeback by scoring 4 goals in less than five minutes to start the second half and he and his teammates outscored the Rock 12-3 the rest of the way. On Sunday Matt Vinc was back on his game and Rochester took care of business in Philadelphia by defeating the Wings 11-7. Rochester has next weekend off but will host the Edmonton Rush on March 29th.

4(4)

Calgary Roughnecks
6-4
Things did not go as planned for the Calgary Roughnecks. Looking for revenge on their earlier 15-8 loss to the Edmonton Rush, the Roughnecks got more of the same as they could not handle Edmonton’s transition. Next Saturday the Roughnecks will travel to Langley to meet the Vancouver Stealth.

5(5)

Toronto Rock
5-7
The Toronto Rock salvaged what was almost a disastrous weekend by defeating the Minnesota Swarm 9-8 in overtime on Sunday. Saturday’s 17-12 loss against the Rochester Knighthawks was another example of Toronto’s inability to stop a run. However Toronto’s weekend split – with a win in Minnesota – stretched out Toronto’s lead over the Swarm and the Wings for the last playoff spot in the East. Toronto travels to Philadelphia next Saturday.

6(6)

Colorado Mammoth
5-8
The Colorado Mammoth are playing for new coaches but they have continued to get off to terrible starts. For the second week in a row the Mammoth fell behind 5-0 to start the game. They climbed out of that hole but this week they were not able to pull out a victory as they fell to the Buffalo Bandits by a final score of 12-9. John Grant scored 4 goals and added two assists and the Colorado power play went 5 for 7 on the night. Colorado has next week off but will host the Philadelphia Wings on March 29th.

7(7)

Vancouver Stealth
3-8
Vancouver had the weekend off but will host the Calgary Roughnecks next Saturday in Langley.

8(8)

Philadelphia Wings
3-9
The Philadelphia Wings lost their 6th in a row when they were defeated by the Rochester Knighthawks 11-7 on Saturday. Next week they will host the Toronto Rock on Saturday night in a game that the Wings need to win to stay in the playoff race..

9(9)

Minnesota Swarm
2-9
Minnesota’s chances for the playoffs look a lot worse today. The Swarm scored 4 goals in the fourth quarter to come back from and 8-4 deficit against the Toronto Rock but Toronto captain Colin Doyle ruined the comeback by scoring the winner in overtime. Next week the Swarm will host the Buffalo Bandits on Sunday.
