The Edmonton Rush remained perfect, but it wasn’t easy. A night after surrendering 20 goals to the Toronto Rock, the Philadelphia Wings tightened up their defence and Evan Kirk made 39 saves to keep Philly in it as Edmonton held on for an 8-6 win over the Wings. Edmonton scored four times in the first quarter, including a pair from Riley Loewen, to take a lead they would never surrender. Edmonton moves to 6-0 and have allowed only 45 goals, an average of just 7.5 per game. Curtis Knight also added a pair of goals for Edmonton. Kevin Crowley led Philadelphia with a pair of goals and an assist. Philadelphia drops to 3-5 after losing both their games this weekend.
Calgary and Colorado kept pace with each other in the battle for playoff positioning in the West Division. The Roughnecks rode 5 goals from Curtis Dickson, 4 goals from Dane Dobbie and 8 assists from Shawn Evans to a 15-13 win over the Minnesota Swarm to pull even on the season at 3-3 with the win while the Swarm drop to an alarming 1-5. Minnesota can take some solace in the offensive burst, however. They had scored just 42 goals in 5 previous games (8.4 per game) before Jordan MacIntosh’s 3 goals and 3 assists led to them last night’s outpouring. Shayne Jackson also had 3 goals for Minny and added a pair of assists.
Colorado got 2 goals each from John Grant Jr. and Sean Pollock and 41 saves from Dillon Ward to eke out a 10-9 win over the Stealth in Vancouver. It was the Mammoth’s third straight win after their early-season struggles and improves their record to 4-5. Tyler Digby had a hat trick for Vancouver and Matt Beers added a pair of goals for the Stealth.
In a battle among the top two teams in the East Division, Rochester followed Edmonton’s lead and allowed just 6 goals in a 9-6 win over the Buffalo Bandits. The Knighthawks have surrendered just 48 goals in their six games and now sit at 4-2, lurking just half a game behind Buffalo, who saw their five-game winning streak come to an end and are now 5-2 on the season. Cory Vitarelli led Rochester with a hat trick and Matt Vinc made 33 saves on 39 shots. The Bandits got 2 goals and 2 assists from Ryan Benesch and 40 saves on 49 shots by Anthony Cosmo, but weren’t able to get their offence rolling.
