NLL Week 2 Staff Picks

For the third consecutive year the Rock and Roughnecks face-off to open their season (Photo: Graig Abel)

It was a long National Lacrosse League off-season and by the end of week two fans will finally get a look at all nine teams.

As they have in 2012 and 2013, the Toronto Rock and Calgary Roughnecks will face-off on Friday night to respectively open their seasons. The pair, who each won on their home turf on the past two opening weekends, have also finished at the top of their division in the past two seasons. On Saturday, the 0-1 Mammoth host the Stealth in Vancouver’s season opener. Fun fact: the Stealth visited the Mammoth in week 2 last year, the Stealth won 17-13.

Why yes, yes I did pick Philly last weekend. And yes, yes I am 3-0 to start this season. Now, I’m sure my bad picking luck will kick in soon enough, but I didn’t rack up three wins till week four last season. Week 4! Will the curse of the home team continue in 2014? (check out our picks below, we seem to think so). It’s not too late to cast your vote in our weekly fan poll.

Calgary @ Toronto
Both teams are hungry to atone for recent shortcomings, but I like the speed of Calgary to win this early showdown. – Chavez

Last year the Rock went into Calgary and dealt the Roughnecks a season-opening defeat. In another tight game, the Roughnecks return the favour. – Stamp

Vancouver @ Colorado
Lots of offense on both benches, but I like the Vancouver defense to dictate this matchup. – Chavez

Having already played a game makes a big difference, especially since Vancouver is working so many new bodies into the mix. – Stamp
