Plenty of guys climb the lacrosse ladder through their careers, reaching the Junior A level and then taking their game to the big boys in senior lacrosse. Tom Newton is no exception. But there is a cool nugget about his 3 solid Junior A seasons at New Westminster and his rookie campaign with the WLA’s Nanaimo Timbermen: the right-handed defensemen brings his game out of Saskatoon. He’s proud to be 1 of 3 Saskatoon products playing senior lacrosse in 2013, as well he should be. But it really shouldn’t be a surprise. His play and leadership led him to being named captain of the ‘Bellies in 2012, and although the T-men struggled a bit in 2013, he’s part of an exciting youth movement that’s promising brighter lacrosse days in Nanaimo down the road. But before that, he’s eager to be one of the drafted on Sept. 16 to show all the work and dedication he’s put into the game can reward a National Lacrosse League team the way it has the teams he’s already been a part of.

What do you feel your greatest asset is that would allow you to translate your game to the NLL? My athleticism and lacrosse IQ
One word to describe your game? Reliable
What role/position do you see yourself playing in the NLL? I see myself being a solid and consistent defender who is capable of making big plays at big moments and who has the speed to transition the ball up the floor to create chances.
What current or former NLLer would you most closely compare or model your game after? I played with Jarrett Toll in junior and always really liked his game. He was solid on loose balls and defense and can create chances at the other end of the floor.
Your greatest accomplishment during your lacrosse career? It was pretty great to be named an assistant captain of the NW ‘Bellies in 2012. It has also been an honor to be one of only 3 players from Saskatchewan playing Senior A lacrosse this summer.Chavez is an avid lacrosse player in Rochester and a journalist for the Democrat and Chronicle as well as a longtime Inside Lacrosse contributor.
