Last night: St. Catharines Saints take opening game of OLA Sr B finals 12-7 over Six Nations Rivermen
Andrew Potter scored 6 goals to lead the St. Catharines Saints to a 12-7 win over the Six Nations Rivermen in the first game of the Ontario Lacrosse Association Senior B championship series Saturday night. The win brings the Saints within two wins of clinching their third straight provincial title and resulting trip to the Presidents Cup. The Saints won each period, outscoring the Rivermen 4-1, 5-4 and 3-2 in the first through third, respectively.
Both teams are enjoying success early in their returns to the OLA Sr B league. It is the Saints third season back in the loop while it is the first season back for a Six Nations team. St. Catharines went 5-11 in the regular season in 2011, their first year back, but came together in the playoffs to win the league and went on to earn a bronze medal at the Presidents Cup. Last year they took another step up the podium with a silver medal. Now they have their sights set on the national championship’s gold.
Potter helped them take last night’s step towards that goal by scoring once in the first, twice in the second, then three more in the third. He also added an assist. Dylan Llord had 2 goals and 3 assists and Corey Fowler a goal and 3 assists to help the Saints’ cause. Brock Boyle was the top Rivermen sniper with a hat trick.
The teams get right back at it today. Game 2 in the series is at 4 pm this afternoon in Six Nations. Game 3 goes next Saturday in St. Catharines then Game 4, if necessary, is in Six Nations next Sunday.
