Last night: Shamrocks pull out tight battle for first place over Thunder

The Victoria Shamrocks and Langley Thunder entered their game Friday night tied for first place in the Western Lacrosse Association. With three minutes to play, there was still nothing to choose between them. It was only Cory Conway’s goal at 17:17 of the third period that broke the tie and gave the Shamrocks an 8-7 win and bragging rights atop the league, at least for now. Victoria, behind 3 goals from Scott Ranger, had taken a 7-5 lead through two periods. Third-period markers from Shayne Jackson and Scott Johnston, each of whom had 2 goals for the game, had evened things up. Matt Flindell made 31 saves on 38 shots to secure the win for the Shamrocks, while Brodie MacDonald stopped 29 of the 37 shots on the Langley net.

Curtis Dickson continued to dominate the league, meanwhile, leading the Maple Ridge Burrards to a 12-8 win over Burnaby and a share of second place with Langley, both clubs sitting at 3-1 while Victoria is 4-0. Dickson scored 6 goals and 3 assists to boost his season totals to 18-14-32 in four games. That gives him leads of 7 in goals and 11 in points on Ranger, who is second in both categories.

Back east, meanwhile, Josh Sanderson and Patrick Merrill made their 2013 debuts with the Snake Island Muskies and helped their team to a 12-7 Three Nations Lacrosse League Sr B win over the Caughnawaga Indians. Sanderson scored 2 goals and 5 assists to lead the Muskies and Andrew Lazore added 3 goals. Miles (4g, 2a) and Lyle Thompson (1g, 4a) combined for 11 points for Caughnawaga.
