The National Lacrosse League has announced Player of the Week awards for Week 16 of the 2013 NLL regular season which featured eight teams in four games last Saturday.
In front of a record-breaking 19,070 fans, the Buffalo Bandits dropped their 10th game this season and missed the post-season for the first time since 2002 as the Rochester Knighthawks defeated the Bandits. Scoring seven fourth quarter goals secured the Mammoth’s spot in the playoffs as Colorado beat the Minnesota Swarm for the second time this season. In the fourth Battle of Alberta, the Calgary Roughnecks returned to their winning ways thwarting the Rush’s chance of being league leaders with an overtime win in Edmonton. Bouncing back from 2012 which saw Washington miss the playoffs, the Stealth not only secured a berth a few weeks ago, but acquired a home field advantage when they defeated the Philadelphia Wings.
If a scoring the game-winner in overtime, securing the 2013 scoring title, setting a franchise high single season points record for the Roughnecks, and helping your team clinch the Western Division regular season title wasn’t enough, Shawn Evans has also been named Offensive Player of the Week for the second time this season. The Calgary forward finished the season with 32 goals and a league high 80 assists (112 points). Evans, a Team 22 Sponsored Athlete recorded 10 points (1G, 9A) and five loose balls in Saturday’s 12-11 overtime win in Edmonton.
Minnesota Swarm’s Jordan MacIntosh has been named Transition Player of the Week recording four points (1G, 3A), 24 loose balls, two forced turnovers, and went 22-for-34 )65%) in the Swarm’s 16-14 loss to the Colorado Mammoth on Saturday. Winning his fourth straight and sixth transition award of the season, MacIntosh, a Team 22 Sponsored Athlete, set a franchise record for most loose balls in a game (24) last weekend, as well as franchise records for loose balls in a season (197) and faceoff wins in a season (241).
Washington Stealth’s Mike Grimes has been named Defensive Player of the Week; only the second time this season the honour hasn’t been given to a goalie. The seventh year veteran finished the year ranked second among defensemen with 20 points (8G, 12A) and added another 95 loose balls this season. In Saturday’s 17-13 Stealth win over the Philadelphia Wings Grimes recorded two points (1G, 1A), seven loose balls, and one forced turnover.
Selected by the Buffalo Bandits in the first round (5th overall) transition player Dhane Smith has been named Rookie Player of the Week. Smith finished his inaugural season fifth in rookie scoring with 44 points (25G, 20A); his 24 goals lead goals scored for the Bandits and placed Smith tied for third among rookies. In last Saturday’s 10-9 loss to the Rochester Knighthawks Smith recorded four points (3G, 1A) and four loose balls.
The NLL Player Awards are determined by a weekly vote of the league’s general managers and head coaches.
