The National Lacrosse League has announced Player of the Week awards for Week 9 of the 2013 NLL regular season which featured all nine teams in five games on Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
Three Edmonton Rush players take home top weekly honours after the Rush snapped a 12 game regular season losing streak against Alberta rivals, the Calgary Roughnecks. Edmonton’s win on Saturday also brought the team back to .500. The Buffalo Bandits played a pair of games last weekend, picking up a win against east division leaders the Toronto Rock, then losing against the Philadelphia Wings the next night.
In his 11th year in the NLL and 4th season with the Edmonton Rush, Ryan Ward has been named Offensive Player of the Week. In Edmonton’s 18-13 win in Calgary, Ward set a franchise record for the Rush with his 10 point (2G, 8A) and 1 loose ball performance. Ward currently ranks third in the league in assists (35) and fourth in points (51).
After the Buffalo Bandits’ two game weekend Jay Thorimbert has been named Transition Player of the Week, recording two goals and 31 loose balls. In Thursday’s 15-13 in Toronto, Thorimbert scored both his goals, recovered 17 loose balls, and went 25-for-31 (81%) on faceoffs. The next evening, Thorimbert scooped up 14 loose balls and went 16-for-25 in the Bandits’ 11-10 OT loss vs. the Wings. Thorimbert currently sits third in the league in faceoff wins (114) and fourth in loose balls (89).
2012 Defensive Player of the Year, Kyle Rubisch, has been named Defensive Player of the Week; the first time this season it has not been awarded to a goalie. Rubisch, who currently leads the league in forced turnovers (29) helped the Rush get back to .500 on Saturday recording two points (1G, 1A), 11 loose balls, and four forced turnovers.
No stranger to weekly or month nods, Team 22 Sponsored Athlete and 2012 first overall pick Mark Matthews has been named Rookie Player of the Week. Matthews who was just named February’s Rookie Player of the Month has also picked up Rookie of the Month in January, Rookie Player of the Week in week 3, and Offensive Player of the Week in week 7. On Saturday, Matthews, who leads the league in goals (28), recorded four points (3G, 1A) and 2 loose balls in the Rush’s win at the Saddledome.
The NLL Player Awards are determined by a weekly vote of the league’s general managers and head coaches.
