The National Lacrosse League has announced Player of the Month and Rookie of the Month award winners for February of the 2013 NLL regular season.
Toronto Rock forward Garrett Billings has been named Player of the Month, and for the second consecutive month, Edmonton Rush forward Mark Matthews has been named Rookie of the Month. Both Billings and Matthews are Team 22 Sponsored Athletes.
Billings, in his fourth season with the Rock, topped the NLL in the 2012 season with a record-setting 82 assists while also setting a new Rock season high record with 114 points. So far this season, Billings ranks second in both points (59) and assists (40). In the Rock’s four games in February Billings has recorded 30 points (12G, 19A) and 16 loose balls; his single game high of 11 points (6G, 5A) on February 15th vs. the Calgary Roughnecks.
Mark Matthews, the first overall selection in the NLL 2012 entry draft, has already acquired three awards this season – Rookie of the Month in January, Rookie of the Week in week 3, and Offensive Player of the Week in week 7. Matthews currently leads the NLL in goals (28) and is seventh in points (46). In the Rush’s 6 games played in February Matthews recorded 23 points (17G, 6A) and 16 loose balls; his single game high of 7 points (6G, 1A) was on February 15th vs. the Washington Stealth.
The NLL Monthly Player Awards are determined by a vote of the league’s general managers and head coaches.
