The National Lacrosse League has announced Player of the Week awards for Week 7 of the 2013 NLL regular season which featured eight of the nine teams in five games on Friday and Saturday.

The Edmonton Rush and Washington Stealth have met twice this season, each team coming away with a road win. In their third, and final regular season game, the Rush outscored the Stealth 15-10 for their first home win of the 2013 season. The Rush went on to win their second of the weekend in Colorado on Saturday, doubling up on the Mammoth 14-7. Rush rookie Mark Matthews became goals scored league leader netting 11 goals over the two games.

Two weeks ago, the Knighthawks went to Banditland, outscoring their opponent in each quarter, handing Buffalo their second home loss in a row. Last weekend, looking for vengeance, Buffalo net minder Anthony Cosmo set a season-high record stopping 54 of the 60 shots he saw, silencing Rochester’s 3 game win streak. Kiel Matisz opened both the 3rd and 4th quarters for the Minnesota Swarm with a short-handed goal. The Swarm scored eight goals in the 3rd quarter, ultimately losing to West Division leaders, the Calgary Roughnecks 17-16, their fifth one goal decision of the season.

In his first year in the NLL, Edmonton Rush’s Mark Matthews is no stranger to weekly awards.  The Team 22 Sponsored Athlete, Matthews, the first overall pick in the 2012 Draft, was named Rookie of the Week in Week 3 and Rookie of the Month in January. Matthews was awarded Offensive Player of the Week recording seven points (6G, 1A) and three loose balls in Edmonton’s 15-10 win over Washington on Friday and another six points (5G, 1A) and two loose balls in the Rush’s 14-7 win in Colorado Saturday. Matthews currently leads the league with 23 goals scored this season.

Acquired by the Edmonton Rush in November (in a trade with Buffalo Bandits), Jeremy Thompson has been awarded Transition Player of the Week. In his second year in NLL, Thompson scooped up 13 loose balls in Edmonton’s Friday night win, and another 11 on Saturday in addition to going 16-for-24 (67%) on faceoffs in the Rush’s win in Colorado.

In his 13th year in the league and 2nd season in Buffalo, veteran goal tender Anthony Cosmo has been named Defensive Player of the Week. Cosmo recorded 54 saves on 60 shots (6.00 GAA, .900 SV%) in the Bandits’ 10-6 win in Rochester Saturday.

For the second time this season, transition Kiel Matisz has been awarded Rookie Player of the Week. Matisz, selected by the Minnesota Swarm in the first round (3rd overall) recorded five points (2G, 3A) and three loose balls in the Swarm’s 17-16 loss to Calgary on Saturday. Team 22 Sponsored Matisz was also named Rookie Player of the Week in Week 4.

The NLL Player Awards are determined by a weekly vote of the league’s general managers and head coaches.
