There were a lot of great moments this week in the NLL. Buffalo bounced back from two losses, bringing Rochester back to Earth after their two big wins last week. The beast in the east (Toronto) managed a five goal victory over the best in the west (Calgary). This week wasn’t all bad for Calgary, though. After the Toronto loss a shootout in Minnesota lead to a Roughnecks victory. A shootout, by the way, that was not without style. Dane Dobbie demonstrated that early, by slipping a back hand through the legs of Evan Kirk when it almost seemed impossible to score. And, even though Minnesota lost, they were no slouches in the good looking goals department. Shayne Jackson made sure of that, faking a shot, and hitting Ryan Benesch for the quick stick goal. And to pile on the pretty goals, Jackson earned himself another mention on this week’s list by stepping by his man and showing the patience of a saint in front, managing to trickle one past Mike Poulin.
Speaking of great moments, Mark Mathews had more of them this week than some guys do in an entire career. The rookie had eleven goals in two games, raising suspicion that he may have been bitten by some sort of goal scoring radioactive spider. Two of Mathews’ goals stand out from the many others he scored this week. One against Washington, where Mathews used his stick skills to create time and space in front of Tyler Richards, then used that time and space to pump three fakes and bury the ball short side. Another against Colorado, where he spun off his man, dove through the crease and fired a perfectly placed shot over the shoulder of Dan Lewis.
Mathews wasn’t the only one scoring this week though. Rhys Duch seemed to have found some defenseman repellant, beating his man, then, beating the slides to shovel a shot past Aaron Bold. Richard Morgan had a nice one, bulling through a defender, after a great feed from Joel Dalgarno. And John Grant Jr. showed that he can score great goals even when the Mammoth are falling apart at the seams. JGJ spun around Kyle Rubisch and fired a bouncer short side for beautiful goal.
