The National Lacrosse League Girl of the Week contest kicked off last week for the 2013 season, and it appears the voting robots are in mid-season form. We saw a total of 201,924 votes cast for the first matchup between Jacq of Calgary and Chelsea of Buffalo. And the dancer with the most votes was Jacq, who moves on with 136,973 votes to Chelsea’s 65,730. So either these dancers have a TON of friends voting, or they both know clever computer people who rigged up a system to keep the votes rolling in. The voting bots are not a new issue for this weekly installment as it’s happened with regularity over the years, but it does kinda make you wish we could have true votes that reflected the true favorite among readers. Alas, we are in the technology age and with that, we move on to our second matchup of the season, featuring April of Philadelphia and Kellie of Edmonton.
For the Philadelphia Angels, April was born in March and that’s pretty funny. Not in a “laughing at you” kinda way, but in a “laughing with you” kinda way. We figure April’s cool with the dry humor of that since she’s the one that pointed it out in her profile on the team page. The 5-foot-7 blonde is a Kinesiology (Physical Therapy Track) and Temple University and she goes by the nickname of “Ape.” That’s for obvious reasons … obviously.
Having spent a year at Temple ourselves, we can definitely relate to her fondess of the South Street scene, but not with her celebrity crush on Richard Gere. And that would explain why Pretty Woman is listed as her favorite movie. Then again, the white boots in her profile picture do ring a bell, even if they are white and not black like the ones Roberts donned in the flick.
April describes herself as passionate, dedicated and fun on her profile page, which goes a long way in explaining her self-described nerdiness. Hey, she’s the one who said math and science are her favorite subjects. But you don’t have to be any good at math to see that there hasn’t been much to cheer about in Philly as the Wings try to figure out what’s up with their 3-game losing streak. Either way, though, you can bet April and her fellow Angels will be doing their best to keep spirits high in Philadelphia.
It’s a bit of the same in Edmonton as Kellie and the Crush cheer for a team that’s off to a 1-4 start. That’s not the type of record a team that played for last year’s title expects to have, but that’s what it is and Kellie and the Crush are there to keep fans motivated in pulling for their favorite Alberta team.
And if anyone’s got the perspective and spirit to do that, it’s Kellie. She’s a full-time dancer and student who has plans to attend the University of Alberta. The Bears don’t have a lacrosse team to cheer for, but they do have hockey (surprise) and curling (bigger surprise).
Making new friends is the best part of being a member of the Crush, she points out on her profile page. But she’s also very adamant in listing the the 3 things she’d never leave home without: Her phone, a water bottle and lip chap. All essential in Alberta, no doubt.
And so endeth the introduction of these lovely young NLL dance team members. So the time for thinking is done and the time for voting is upon you. Make your selection and we’ll be back next Tuesday with out third matchup of the season with another Buffalo vs. Calgary matchup.
