While there were only four games this week in the National Lacrosse League, there were a lot of great goals. Stephen Keogh works, swims, and dives to score an excellent goal in a game that didn’t see a lot of offence. Keil Matisz and Shayne Jackson, through a little rookie connection magic, make it on the list this week after Jackson goes inside-outside on his man and hits a cutting Matisz with a pin-point backhand pass for the goal. Jamie Lincoln scored a beauty this week after the mighty Mammoth power play went to work with a one-two-three passing play. Perhaps unexpectedly, Andrew Suitor makes his second appearance on this list in as many weeks. Like last week, Suitor scored a breakaway goal in transition. Unlike last week, in week five he dove through the crease, and shoveled the ball five hole for the highlight reel marker.
Matt Gibson and Mark Mathews, both rookies, scored similar goals from behind the net. Gibson showed everybody in the league what he can do by waiting just long enough so that no one would expect a wraparound from behind the net, then executed an excellent dive through the crease and tucked the ball by the post. Mathews, on the other hand, continues to justify the hype around him at the beginning of the year by picking up a loose ball in the corner, racing behind the net and scoring a one handed wrap far side.
Dane Dobbie and Alex Turner also had similar goals this week. Both picked up their own rebound to score, the difference being that Dobbie worked off his defender, fired wide, but scooped the rebound from off the boards to score for the Roughnecks. Unlike Dobbie, Turner fired on target but was stopped by Mike Poulin. Then a battle for the ball, which was apparently caked in butter, waged in front. Finally after a few attempts by both himself and the Calgary D to snatch up the loose ball, Turner did, and lit the lamp. Finally, after Brodie Macdonald stopped a pentalty shot, it only took Jeremy Thompson six seconds to rip one home off the ensuing faceoff. This is something that may look familiar to Jeremy Thompson fans.
