It was an all New England matchup Saturday night at the New England Sports Center where the Boston Rockhoppers hosted the Rhode Island Kingfish. Led by a 10-goal run from the end of the first quarter to the end of the third quarter, the Rockhoppers defeated the Kingfish 20-7 before around 1,500 fans who came from all over New England to support both teams.The win improves Boston to 4-1 on the season, while Rhode Island falls to 0-3. It was a slow first quarter as the teams only scored a combined three goals, with Boston leading 2-1. In the second quarter they quickly picked up the pace, outscoring the Kingfish 4-0 in the quarter to take a 6-1 lead going into halftime.
The Rockhoppers continued their momentum by scoring the first five goals of the third quarter to take an 11-1 lead before Rhode Island finally got back on the scoreboard with 4:55 left in the third quarter. Boston led 12-3 going into the final stanza.
It was a back and forth final quarter as Boston outscored Rhode Island 8-4, accounting for the final score of 20-7. Boston had a very balanced scoring attack with two players with four-goal performances and two others with hat tricks. Marty Bowes and Mike Stone each had four goals, while Andrew Kirkaldy and Ryan Hoffmeister each had three goals.
Michael Maggio led the Kingfish with a hat trick of his own, while goaltender Joe Evans kept Rhode Island in the game making plenty of outstanding saves. Jameson Love played the fourth quarter between the pipes for the Kingfish. Boston split their time in net with Vince Talbot playing the first half, and Nick Schroeder playing in the second. Also, Peter Vlahakis did a solid job in the face off circle.
The Rockhoppers are off next weekend, with the Kingfish traveling to Baltimore. Both teams will return to the New England Sports Center on Feb. 23 to conclude their season series. Face off is slated for 7:00 p.m. and tickets can be purchased by visiting www.bostonrockhoppers.com.
