The busiest weekend of the 2013 National Lacrosse League season saw seven games, involving all nine teams, five of those playing two games over three days. On Friday, the Toronto Rock held the Minnesota Swarm scoreless in the 4th quarter to win 13-12. In the first of two road wins, in a rematch of their week 3 game, the Calgary Roughnecks bested the Colorado Mammoth 19-12. The 3rd game on Friday, also a rematch of their week 3 showdown, the Washington Stealth defeated the Edmonton Rush 12-10. On Saturday, the Rochester Knighthawks remained winless as the Toronto Rock won their second of the weekend 11-7. In the 3rd rematch of the weekend, the Buffalo Bandits avenged their week 2 loss to the Philadelphia Wings, winning 14-13. Also on Saturday, the Minnesota Swarm won their home opener 15-14 against the Washington Stealth. In the final game of the weekend, the Calgary Roughnecks picked up their second road win beating the Philadelphia Wings 16-8.
In his second year with the Calgary Roughnecks, Shawn Evans was awarded Offensive Player of the Week after recording 19 points over the weekend. Evans had 13 points (4G, 9A) and 5 loose balls in Friday’s 19-12 win in Colorado and 6 points (2G, 4A) and 7 loose balls in Sunday’s 16-8 win in Philadelphia.
Calgary native, now in his 3rd year with the Roughnecks, Geoff Snider was awarded Transition Player of the Week after not only dominating the playoff circle, but picking up 28 loose balls and 7 points over the weekend. On Friday, Snider recorded 3 points (1G, 2A), 15 loose balls, and went 23-for-29 (79%) on faceoffs and recorded another 4 points (3G, 1A), 13 loose balls, and went 20-for-26 (77%) on faceoffs on Sunday.
Acquired by the Roughnecks in 2010, goaltender Mike Poulin (2GP, 2W, 10.00 GAA, .800 SV%) has been named Defensive Player of the Week. On Friday, Poulin stopped 38 of the 50 shots in Calgary’s win over Colorado. On Sunday, Poulin made 42 saves on 50 shots in the win over Philadelphia.
Transition Kiel Matisz, a Team 22 Sponsored Athlete who was selected in the first round (3rd overall) by the Minnesota Swarm has been awarded Rookie Player of the Week with 5 points (3G, 2A) and 8 loose balls in Friday’s 13-12 loss to Toronto and another 5 points (3G, 2A) and 5 loose balls in Saturday’s 15-14 win over Washington.
The NLL Player Awards are determined by a weekly vote of the league’s general managers and head coaches.
