This past week was busy in the National Lacrosse League. Seven games saw every team in action and with this many games variety is to be expected. Two of the seven games this week were decided by a margin greater than six, while three other games were decided by a margin of just one.
Much like the games themselves, the best goals this week are spiced with variety. Some goals relied on finesse, like Dane Dobbie floating a behind the back shot past Nick Patterson for one of his eight goals this week. Or Curtis Dickson with a hard but effortless cut to the net, a quick fake, and a snipe upstairs. Even Mitch McMichael, who so far this year has only lit the lamp twice, showed how creative he can be with some time in front and scored between his own legs with his back to Aaron Bold.
At the other end of the spectrum, some of the best goals this week relied solely on power. Like Andrew Suitor intercepting a pass, then turning on the jets, then strapping his jets to his horse, and flying down the floor to score a breakaway goal. Geoff Snider exercised his faceoff muscle all game against Philadelphia, even scoring right off the draw for a beauty. Jordan McBride had to turn on the grit to get to the net and finish after picking up a loose ball out front. Not to be outdone by the more tactful goals this week, Jordan Hall showcased a bit from both worlds when he looked far side, saw nothing, so he planted his feet and fired an absolute rocket of a backhand short side.
Some goals this week don’t happen to fit into an easily definable category. What could you call Drew Westervelt’s behind-the-net-quick-stick-dive goal? Or Mike Hominuck’s bar down, back turned, shovel shot? Was it power, speed, skill, or something else that Rhys Duch used to walk around seemingly everyone in the rink and pot the easy goal?
