Mark Matthews is putting up the numbers. So far. The thing is, it’s exactly what we expected to see from him as the big man out of Oshawa has carded 9 points in his first 2 National Lacrosse League games. But what’s more impressive? The points themselves, or the fact that he’s delivering in the face of expectation? The thing is, Matthews isn’t the only rookie out there off to an impressive start. Dhane Smith in Buffalo has looked superb and Matthews’ teammate, Curtis Knight, has been solid with the work ethic that Edmonton coach Derek Keenan has raved about. So by now you’ve probably guessed the topic for today’s poll, not that the headline was all that discreet either. But once you turn the page, you can actually do something with those thoughts in your head as to which rookie has been the most impressive.
Beyond the trio already mentioned, there’s quite a corps of rooks in Washington, especially on the back end. Tyler Garrison has been part of a resurgence of sorts for the Stealth, who are 2-1. In Philadelphia, Mike Manley and CJ Costabile are contributors to yet another resurgence as the Wings are the only unbeaten team in the league.
Minnesota has a handful of impressive first-year players, again, as Shayne Jackson and Kyle Sorensen have done the work to justify their position as first-round draft picks. And lest we look past Calgary, the Roughnecks are a surprising 0-2 but they’re getting some solid work out of their first-round draft picks in Joe Resetarits and Matthew Dinsdale.
