The Kentucky Stickhorses were not able to claim victory in their first North American Lacrosse League road game on Saturday night. The Boston Rockhoppers led a tight contest until pulling away late in the 3rd quarter to claim their second win of the season over Kentucky.
Face-offs, ground balls and penalties all made a major difference for Boston in the game with Kentucky allowing extra power play chances to Boston and not being able to capitalize effectively during their own opportunities. Goaltending play was notable for both teams, with Vincent Talbot securing the win for Boston. Spencer Lyons started for Kentucky with solid play and a number of remarkable saves, but faced too many to keep Kentucky in contention. Patrick Crosby came into the game for Kentucky in the 4th quarter with similarly solid play on numerous scoring chances for Boston. Scoring was led by Ryan Hotaling for Boston with 5 goals, followed by Tommy Palasek and Mike Stone with three goals each. Joel Derechinsky led Kentucky scoring with 3 goals.
After dropping 2 of their first 3 games this season, both to Boston, Kentucky is looking ahead to its off week to strengthen its game before hosting the Baltimore Bombers for a double-header weekend in February. “Tonight made clear to everyone in our organization what we need to work on and where we need to improve our chemistry,” said Stickhorses defensive coach Sean Murphy. “We’re looking forward to some productive practice time this coming weekend to consolidate our efforts before the heart of the season.”
In addition to Crosby seeing his first action for Kentucky this year, Stickhorses Jake Davis and Dewey Porter made their debut on Saturday night. “Crosby, Davis, & Porter all came ready to play last night and contribute to the team however we needed them. Davis showed his characteristic hustle all game long. Crosby came prepared to fill his role and was ready to go right away when we called on him. We’re proud to have these guys as part of team and look forward to them contributing to our success in the future.”
The Stickhorses’ next action is a home doubleheader weekend against the Baltimore Bombers on February 1st and 3rd at Freedom Hall in Louisville. Tickets and information about the team are available at www.kentuckystickhorses.com or by firstname.lastname@example.org.
