We received an email wondering “why no one is mentioning that that goal should have not counted?” That goal, of course, is the Luke Wiles/John Tavares hidden ball trick that led to an easy goal for JT. A call to the league offices revealed that they had received some emails with the same question. So a while later, NLL VP Communications Doug Fritts took to Twitter to address the situation. “Mechanics on restart before JT’s hidden ball goal in Friday’s game: Ref should have indicated ball location prior to whistle resuming play.”
Kudos to the NLL for admitting the error. And to those wondering why the goal wasn’t included in our goal of the week poll, that’s why. One last thing. Before anyone jumps to damn the ref for missing this, watch the opening seconds of the highlight video again and notice the angles between JT, Wiles and the ref. There’s a pretty good chance that Tavares aligned himself so that not even the ref saw Wiles give him the ball. He’s not arguably the best ever for nothing.
