Wayne VanEvery earned the Canadian Lacrosse League Offensive Player of the Week award for CLax’s opening week with six goals and a pair of assists in his Ohsweken Demons’ 18-15 win over the Iroquois Ironmen. VanEvery opened the game with a natural hat trick and scored the first goal of the second quarter to give the Demons a 6-1 lead. They had to hold on as the Ironmen battled back, coming within two goals at 17-15 by scoring four straight in the fourth quarter, but the early hole proved too deep to climb out of. Mack O’Brien was named the Transition Player of the Week. He scored three goals on the run as his Toronto Shooting Stars fell 11-10 in pro lacrosse’s return to the old Maple Leaf Gardens, now called the Mattamy Athletic Centre. Turfdogs goalie John Chesebrough is the Defensive Player of the Week after making 39 saves (many of them spectacular) on 49 shots in Durham’s win. Both games can be seen on demand at the JVI Productions web site.
