The Washington Stealth entertained record breaking in-house fans and online audiences with a 13-12 win over defending champs, the Rochester Knighthawks, last Saturday to open the 2013 National Lacrosse League season. In addition to their first win of the season, three Stealth players have been named in NLL Player of the Week awards.

Cliff Smith, now in his third season with the Stealth, was named Offensive Player of the Week after his game-high 8 points (3G, 5A) on Saturday.

Signed by Washington as a free agent, rookie Mitch McMichael was named Transition Player of the Week, recovering 4 loose balls and scoring the Stealth’s go-ahead goal with 5:46 left in the 4th quarter.

Forward Kyle Buchanan, selected by the Stealth in the 6th round (48th overall) of the 2012 NLL Entry Draft, was named Rookie Player of the Week with 4 assists and 2 loose balls in his NLL debut.

Despite the Knighthawks’ loss on Saturday, Matt Vinc, two time goaltender of the year, was named Defensive Player of the Week making 51 saves on 64 shots (13.00GAA, .797 SV%).

The NLL Player Awards are determined by a weekly vote of the league’s general managers and head coaches.
