The passing last year of Chris Sanderson left many heavy hearts in the lacrosse world, especially in Philadelphia where Wings fans saw him play in goal and then help coach the team. So when Sanderson lost his courageous battle with brain cancer in June, Wings fan club president Rocco Granato wouldn’t let the story end there. Granato came up with the idea of a pin to commemorate Sanderson, and the work of Donald Duclos (design) and Danny Vu (mold) is the finished product you see here. Granato tells ILIndoor that the pin includes Sanderson’s Team Canada jersey number (17) and his Wings number (00) with the initials “BSC” for Brogann, Stevie and Clementine, his family.
“Chris will ALWAYS be a part of the Wings family, and will always be remembered by the fans,” Granato says.
Granato is hoping to have the pins by Feb. 8 and they’ll be available to Wings Fan Club members with a paid membership, or for $7 at the Fan Club table at games.
Proceeds will benefit the Sanderson family. Brogann Sanderson says she’s appreciative of the support and reminds fans that a memorial trust has been set up for the Sanderson daughters: Guggenheim Partners, c/o Chris Sanderson Memorial Trust, 1045 1st Ave, Suite 120, King of Prussia, PA 19406. Checks are payable to “Chris Sanderson Memorial Trust.”Chavez is an avid lacrosse player in Rochester and a journalist for the Democrat and Chronicle as well as a longtime Inside Lacrosse contributor.
