Brodie Merrill has been named captain of the Philadelphia Wings for the second straight season, with defenseman Brett Manney, new forward Kevin Ross and transition man Max Seibald to serve as assistant captains for the 2013 National Lacrosse League. The Wings open their season Friday night at home against the Buffalo Bandits. Merrill was named captain last year, his first with the Wings after being traded to Philadelphia from Edmonton, where he also was team captain. Ross is in his first year with the Wings after he was traded from the Minnesota Swarm. Manney is in his third season with the Wings and is from nearby Newtown, Pa. Seibald is in his fourth season with the Wings but begins the year on the Physically Unable to Perform list as he recovers from a broken foot. “We are fortunate to have strong leadership from many different players, which is a good sign heading into the season,” Merrill told the Philadelphia Wings website.Chavez is an avid lacrosse player in Rochester and a journalist for the Democrat and Chronicle as well as a longtime Inside Lacrosse contributor.
