The Toronto Shooting Stars will honor all players and coaches from the original Toronto Shooting Stars teams of the early 1970s along with the 1974 Toronto Tomahawks and the 1999 & 2000 Toronto Rock, the last professional sports team to play at Maple Leaf Gardens before the storied building was closed. The honoring of these teams will come on Sunday January 13th, 2013 before the Toronto Shooting Stars open their 2013 season against the Durham TurfDogs at 2pm.
Clax Commissioner Paul St. John said “Now that the historic building has been re-opened, we think it is a great time to honor teams that once played here. We also want to honor players who played for our namesake team the Shooting Stars from 1973 to 1975 as well as the men that coached them.
“We’ll try to get as many players as possible to attend as not only will it be great to honor them, it will also be great to get many in the same room again so they can rehash some stories of their great lacrosse careers, some embellished of course,” St. John concluded with a smile.
Bob Hanna, coach of the Shooting Stars in 1973 and the Tomahawks in 1974, is thrilled for the opportunity to see many of the players he once coached. “Sounds like a great idea. Lacrosse does not seem to do enough to remember past players (heroes?),” Hanna said. “Looking forward to seeing guys I have not seen in too long a time.”
Jim Veltman, Captain of the Toronto Rock during their 2 year tenure at the Gardens is also excited. “I was fortunate enough to play in front of sold out crowds in Buffalo in the early ’90s and never thought that atmosphere could be replicated in Toronto. Well, I couldn’t have been more wrong as it didn’t take long for fans to come in droves and sell out the Gardens,” Veltman recalled. “We all experienced memorable games, including two championships, in a building that provided lacrosse action and excitement up close. Memories of fans, teammates, opponents and plays that will last a lifetime.”
Veltman, Hanna and many other former players will be on hand to sign autographs during and after the game. For tickets visit Ticketmaster or the Mattamy Athletic Centre box office.
A list of all players and coaches invited to the January 13th game can be found on the Clax website.
