The Toronto Shooting Stars and Durham Turfdogs renewed their old Oshawa rivalry on the weekend with a Canadian Lacrosse League exhibition game played Sunday at the Stephen Leacock Arena in Scarborough. Bragging rights will have to be settled another day, though: the former Oshawa Machine scored the last two goals of the game to earn a 12-12 tie in their first game as Toronto. Blake Kenny led the way for the Shooting Stars with two goals and four assists. Daniel Fleming and Jackson Gair each added a pair of goals for the Stars. Jamie Speck scored the tying goal with 1:44 to play. Mike Gillan, Aidan Genik, Scott Gamble, Mike Holmes and Dilan Graham added singles.
Scott DeFrancesco, who was third in the league last year with 32 goals, scored a hat trick for the Turfdogs. Graham Bergsma and Steve Conrad each tallied twice for Durham. Dan Ransom, John St. John, Clare Donnelly, Todd Collins and Shane Scott had one each.
Toronto led 4-3 after the first quarter but Durham enjoyed a 5-2 edge in the second to head into halftime with an 8-6 lead. After the teams scored twice each in the third, Bergsma’s marker 50 seconds into the final frame pushed the Durham lead to three, 11-8.
The Shooting Stars battled back, though, scoring four of the game’s final five goals to salvage a split in their first game representing Canada’s largest city. Craig Wende, Jason Armstrong and Kalvin Thomas split time in the Durham net. Angus Dineley and Eric Penney played goal for the Shooting Stars.
The same teams will meet again next Sunday, December 2, at the Stephen Leacock Arena at 1 pm. Admission is free.
The tie game was CLax’s first exhibition tilt leading up to the 2013 season, the league’s second. The Shooting Stars and Niagara Lock Monsters (formerly Peel Avengers) have both moved to new homes for 2013 after sharing space in Oshawa and Brampton for the first year. CLax has also added an expansion team: the Barrie Blizzard.
