He’s Dan Dawson in Matt Giles’ body. That’s one of the best ways to describe who Kiel Matisz is and how he plays the game of lacrosse. AT 6’5 220lbs, Matisz is a monster in the offensive zone but has incredibly soft hands that you don’t often see on a player of his size. With the 3rd overall pick in this year’s NLL entry draft, the Minnesota Swarm picked up what they hope will be one of the missing pieces to the puzzle and with some familiar faces on the roster, the Robert Morris grab is excited to attend his first professional lacrosse camp.
“I’d like my professional career to progress much like my junior career; the more familiar you become with your teammates the more success you can have.” Matisz was a consistent player for the Burlington Chiefs of the Ontario Jr. A loop but in his final year he dropped 108pts playing with a group of guys he’d know for years.
He may not have a rookie season like Rhys Duch, Gavin Prout or Curtis Dickson but if he can create instant cohesion with Callum Crawford and work off ball for Ryan Benesch there’s no limit to the career he can have in St. Paul.
This week on the OTCB podcast, we take a look at one of the newest members of Swarm-Nation, Kiel Matisz.
Since graduating from RMU, or “BobbyMoLax” as the kids on twitter like to call it, Matisz has been a very busy player making appearances all across North American representing club, country and sponsor. Currently, he’s in the Bahamas with Under-Armour’s “TEAM22”, composed from a group of players (most under the age of 25) who are the new face of Under-Armour lacrosse, for a lacrosse retreat and seminar. He’s spent time on the big island of Hawaii for the world famous Hawaii Invitational playing for Dirty Lax, a club team on the rise, as it’s basically the Canadian National B-team made from some of the best young Canadian field payers. Much of that group was participating in the Duel in Denver as Team Canada defeated Team USA in a prelude to the 2014 IFL World Championships.
All this before he plays his first professional lacrosse game in the NLL- technically he’s played four pro games for the Jacksonville Bullies of the PLL however they’ve folded and the future of the PLL is unknown.
But with just a few weeks to go until the Minnesota Swarm begin their quest for another shot at the West title; Matisz is excited to get going. “It’s going to be great to get out there with the guys. Playing in the NLL has been a long time dream for me.”
Unfortunately for Swarm fans and the Neverland family, a job with Pepsi Canada will keep Matisz in Ontario during the season and he’ll have to settle for collecting air miles. But he knows the importance of team bonding and will do everything he can to build that chemistry as quickly as he can during camp.
He’s modeled his game after Dan Dawson but he bangs and crashes like Matt Giles. Get ready Swarm fans you have a fantastic addition coming to the Hive.
