The World U19 field lacrosse championships opened yesterday in Turku, Finland. The game everyone has been looking forward to hits the pitch tonight, though, when the U.S. and Canada go head to head in each team’s first match. The Americans are heavy favourites to win the gold medal. They are the top field lacrosse country in the world and have an immensely strong program for the U19s. Canada counters with a group of primarily box players who have developed their ability in the field game largely through playing on scholarship at American universities. Canada’s team comprises mostly players from the OLA Junior A league with a handful from the BCJALL as well. The Canucks feature four players each from the Whitby Warriors and Peterborough Lakers, both of whom are awaiting the completion of the worlds to resume their quest for the Minto Cup. So far the upstarts are faring well in their quest to show they can compete with the favourites. Canada leads 3-1 after the first quarter.
