It’s been since the 2007 season that someone other than Coquitlam has finished at the top of the B.C. Junior A table. Teams like New Westminster, Burnaby and Victoria have tried, but come up short. The Delta Islanders, with new coach Shawn Springett, have designs on seeing their name at the top this season and Springett says there are no shortcuts. “We want to build something here where people want to come and be part of it,” Springett told The Delta Optimist of the coaching staff he’s put together. “The players need to see this is the place they want to be. We want to help them get to the next level and we are all ex-players who have gone through the ranks and know what it takes to get there.” With shooters like Logan Schuss and Mike Mallory back, it’s easy to see how the Islanders may meet that goal. But it also includes an impressive array of rookies, 12 in all, that Springett expects will contribute. Delta’s home opener is May 5 at Nanaimo after opening with 3 games on the road, starting this weekend.Chavez is an avid lacrosse player in Rochester and a journalist for the Democrat and Chronicle as well as a longtime Inside Lacrosse contributor.
