National Lacrosse League Power Rankings: Week 15

national-lacrosse-league-power-rankings-week-15

There were four games in the NLL this weekend and even though I was on a pretty good run with my predictions over the last few weeks I was a perfect 0 for 4 this weekend. In Minnesota the Swarm continues to baffle me. After losing 4 in a row the Swarm have now won 2 straight and have solidified a playoff berth with an 14-9 victory over the Stealth. Buffalo continued their hot and cold play as they lost an 11-8 game to the stingy Edmonton Rush. In Rochester the Knighthawks continued what started halfway through their game in Calgary last week. Last week it was too little too late but not this week as the Knighthawks competed from the opening whistle and got a huge home win (14-12) over the Roughnecks. And last but not least, the Toronto Rock threw up a dud in a 19-12 loss to John Grant Jr. and the surging Colorado Mammoth in the CBS game of the week.

Let’s check out the Power Rankings.

1(1)

Colorado Mammoth
11-3
It was no contest as the Colorado Mammoth disposed of the Toronto Rock 19-12 on Saturday. John Grant Jr. had 6 points to climb to 104 on the season so with two games remaining he will need 12 points to break John Tavares’ single season record of 115 points. Next Friday the Mammoth host the Edmonton Rush and they’ll finish their season at Minnesota the final week of the regular season.

2(2)

Calgary Roughnecks
11-4
Without their number one goalie, the Calgary Roughnecks went into Rochester and lost a close one 14-12. Last season Calgary suffered some late season nagging injuries and it hurt them in the playoffs. They don’t want to stumble into the playoffs again. If they are hurting they will get an extra week to heal as Calgary plays their last game of the season in Edmonton this Saturday.

3(4)

Toronto Rock
7-7
It had to happen sooner or later. Young goaltender Nick Rose got lit up early in Colorado and the Toronto Rock never fully recovered as they went on to a 19-12 defeat. If Rose has the makeup that the Toronto staff believes he has, he will simply shake this off for his next start. Toronto will travel even further this weekend when they go to Washington for a game against the Stealth and then will finish their season in Edmonton the next week.

4(3)

Philadelphia Wings
7-7
The Wings had this weekend off but will be back in Minnesota on Saturday and then in Rochester the last week of the season.

5(5)

Minnesota Swarm
7-7
Minnesota won their second in a row and clinched a playoff spot with a convincing 14-9 victory over the Washington Stealth this weekend. Ryan Benesch scored 5 points in his first game in three weeks but Callum Crawford was the top scorer with 4 goals and 3 assists. The Swarm continue to get great goaltending from their rookie duo and this week it was Tyler Carlson holding the opposition to 9 goals. The Swarm will host Philly on Saturday and then travel to Colorado the last week of the season.

6(7)

Rochester Knighthawks
6-8
Even though they were not facing Calgary’s star goaltender Mike Poulin (out with injury), the Rochester Knighthwaks had a huge victory by defeating Calgary 14-12 in Rochester. Rookies Stephen Keogh and Johnny Powless scored 6 and 7 points respectively. I don’t want to jinx this game but Saturday’s CBS matchup between the Rochester Knighthawks and the Buffalo Bandits has monumental importance as Rochester could still finish anywhere between first and last in the East.

7(8)

Edmonton Rush
5-8
It was another big win for the Edmonton Rush as they defeated the Buffalo Bandits 11-8. The Rush are now on a bit of a run as they have now won 3 of their last 4 and have a 4- 2 record at home. This is a big weekend for Edmonton as they play in Colorado on Friday and host the Roughnecks on Saturday before finishing out their season next week at home to Toronto.

8(6)

Buffalo Bandits
5-9
The only thing consistent with the Bandits this year is their inconsistency. Buffalo’s loss to the Edmonton Rush will ensure the Bandits would lose the tiebreaker if the last playoff spot were between Buffalo and Edmonton. Buffalo has a huge game against the Rochester on Saturday and will finish their season the next week in Washington.

9(9)

Washington Stealth
4-10
The Washington Stealth aren’t doing themselves any favours and the way things are looking there’s a good chance they’ll have to win both of their remaining games to make the playoffs. Washington ends their season with home games against the Rock this weekend and against Buffalo the next week.
