CUFLA names All-Stars heading into championship weekend, plus the links

Junior lacrosse in Canada was well-represented on the CUFLA All-Star teams that were unveiled Thursday as the CUFLA prepares for the weekend’s Baggataway Cup, Canada’s collegiate national championship for field lacrosse. Named to the first team for the West is goalie Cameron Watts (St. Catharines, Jr. A), attackman Ryan Serville (Whitby, Jr. A), midfielder Craig England (Orangeville) and defenseman Ryan Cavanagh (Oakville, Jr. B). Among the East All-Stars are Greg Harnett (Orangeville, Jr. A and recent Calgary Roughnecks draft pick) on defense, Niall Caravello (Orangeville, Jr. A) and Ryan Besse (Orangeville, Jr. A) at midfield. West Division
Attack: Eric Hubert (Guelph), Ryan Serville (Guelph), Carter Williams (McMaster)
Midfield: Jordan Critch (Guelph), Scott Watson (Western), Craig England (Brock), Ben Van Galen, faceoff specialist (Guelph), Russel Poulton, defensive midfield (Guelph), Nikkolas Trillo, longstick (Western).
Defense: Eric Pitre (Western), Ryan Cavanagh (Western), Brendan Farrer (Western).

East Division
Attack: Mike Dube (Bishop’s), Josh Crone (Bishop’s), Alex Rohrbach (McGill).
Midfield: Ryan Besse (McGill), Shane Davidson (Carleton), Niall Caravello (Trent), J.J. Miller, faceoff specialist (McGill), Mason Geldart, defensive midfield (Bishop’s), David Hogarth, longstick (McGill).
Defense: Greg Harnett (Bishop’s), Kyle Robinson (McGill), Corey Wright (Toronto).
Goal: Ryan McGillis (McGill).
Tonight at 5, Carleton plays Brock, followed by Western vs. Bishop’s at 7:30. Tomorrow at 6, it’s McGill vs. the Carleton-Brock winner, followed by Guelph vs. the Western-Bishop’s winner at 8 p.m. The winners from Saturday play Sunday at 1 p.m. for the Baggataway Cup. All games are at TD Waterhouse Stadium.

The Brampton Excelsiors will field a Junior B lacrosse team next summer after the OLA Junior B Council gave its approval last month. Mike Miles will leave his post as an assistant with Newmarket to be the GM and coach of the new Brampton team, which will play home games at Memorial Arena. The team will compete in the South West Division of the Western Conference against Hamilton, Welland, Niagara, St. Catharines and Six Nations.
