ILIndoor.com has learned that the dispersal draft for the Boston Blazers will take place Friday, Sept. 9 at 1 p.m. The National Lacrosse League team announced on Thursday that it is suspending operations for the 2012 season, so the dispersal draft to follow will offer the remaining 9 NLL teams some very attractive talent. The Philadelphia Wings have the No. 1 pick, which gives the Wings a pair of No. 1 draft picks with the dispersal draft next week and the entry draft on Sept. 21 in Toronto, unless trades between now and then shift the order. Among the bigger names available in the dispersal include forwards Dan Dawson and Josh Sanderson, along with Casey Powell, whose pro career was in question following a violent collision in the MLL title game which injured his left knee, but Powell has indicated in recent days that he’ll return to the pro game. Turn the page to see the order of the dispersal draft, as provided by the NLL.
Goalie Anthony Cosmo also is available, along with some fantastic defensive talent in Kyle Rubisch, named to the NLL All-Rookie team last year, Mitch Belisle, Ryan Dilks, Mike Kirk, Greg Downing, John Durno and Jack Reid. It was this unit that held NLL foes to a league-low 155 goals last winter. Backup goalie Nick Rose has a bright future in the league as well.
Forwards Kevin Buchanan and Nick Cotter are additional sticks without a home and Ryan Hotaling, who emerged as one of the NLL’s top faceoff men over the past 2 seasons, also is available. Veteran Ryan Powell, who played 7 games with Boston last season, is an unrestricted free agent, as is Thomas Hajek.
Should the order stand and the Wings do have the top pick in both drafts, they stand to gain tremendously for an offense whose 143 goals was worst in the NLL last year. There’s some nice offensive talent to pluck from the Boston roster and this year’s entry draft is considered by many to be the deepest in years, with plenty of offensive talent to help turn around any team that may be looking for an offensive infusion.
