They went 19-0-1 during the regular season, swept both their provincial playoff series, and were expected to be Alberta’s best bet at the Minto Cup maybe ever, but the Calgary Raiders, as good as they were before leaving for Coquitlam, were beaten three times during the Minto’s round robin, sent packing just days after their arrival.
Currently sitting first in the Alberta Junior ‘A’ standings with a 7-2 record, the Raiders added some additional ammo from Ontario (yes, we said Ontario), IL Indoor confirming that Calgary have traded for Orangeville Northmen versatile ball player Cody McMahon, the deal finalized and approved earlier today.
Cody McMahon, son of Calgary Roughnecks assistant coach Bob McMahon, joins fellow former Horn Head Bruce Codd, who on top of serving as the Alberta Lacrosse Association’s technical director and playing pro lacrosse for the Roughnecks, also coaches the Raiders, IL Indoor naming Codd our Junior ‘A’ Coach of the Year in 2009.
Codd was also a two-time Minto winner with the Northmen as a player (1995 & 1996), and hopes that McMahon, who is still only 19-years-old and already has two Minto rings on his resume, one as a rostered call-up and the other as a full-timer, will share that Cup winning experience with the rest of the Raiders’ roster.
“We know that he’s a good kid that knows what it takes to win a Minto Cup,” Codd told IL Indoor on Wednesday. ” Cody is a very intelligent player that raises our team lacrosse IQ right away. We’re very happy to be able to add him to our roster.”
McMahon, who had yet to play for the Junior ‘A’ Northmen this year but has scored 5-goals in two starts for the city’s ‘B’ side, scored 25-goals and added 28-assists during the OLA regular season in 2010, able to play either side of the floor and a capable face-off taker too.
While the Raiders have jumped out to another strong record to start the summer, the Northmen, who have won three OLA titles and two Minto Cups over the past three years, have struggled by their recent standards, just 2-3 out of the gates in 2011.
