UncategorizedNLL Week 2: ILIndoor’s Rookie Report

Toronto's Aaron Pascas
Just 2 weeks in and the scene’s gonna shuffle a bit but that’s to be expected, especially when ya try to gauge the game of National Lacrosse League rookies. Some names we knew coming in, others we didn’t. Cody Jamieson put on a sweet display for the Knighthawks in a losing effort. Teammate Jarrett Davis, a fellow first-round draft pick, made his NLL debut. Toronto’s Aaron Pascas continues to deliver, and Boston’s Kyle Rubisch crafted another solid outing for a Blazers defense that’s letting the vaunted offense find its groove. So what’s there to say these days about the rookie crop of the NLL? Turn the page to find out who did, or didn’t, do what.
1. Aaron Pascas, Toronto: The undrafted forward was again impressive, helping the Rock win a regular-season game in Rochester for the first time in 16 tries. He scored 2 goals on 3 shots, both in the second half, which proved helpful in holding off a late Rochester rally. His 4 total goals and single assist ranks him No. 2 among all rooks early in the scoring race.
2. Cody Jamieson, Rochester: The forward scored the game’s first goal before it all fell apart for Rochester in a home loss to Toronto. He finished with his first hat trick, even if he did take 17 shots. More than scoring, though, he’s showing the form and poise that observers raved about before the season started and it’s obvious that the more comfortable he gets, the more lethal he’s going to become.
3. Curtis Dickson, Calgary: Effectiveness is not measured on goals alone, but it does help. Forward had a big debut weekend last week with 3 goals in 2 games, but struggled this past weekend with just 1 goal on 9 shots and just 2 loosies in the Riggers’ home loss to Colorado.
4. Kyle Rubisch, Boston: Defenseman scooped 6 loosies for a unit that held the Edmonton Rush to just 7 goals. In 2 games, his 17 loose balls is tops among all rooks.
5. Andrew Suitor, Minnesota: 2 games for the tranny, 2 fights. Dropped gloves with Matt Beers and held his own in the Swarm’s impressive road win over the Stealth. He also scooped 6 loosies.
6. Alex Kedoh-Hill, Edmonton: The forward scored a pair of goals, including Edmonton’s first, on 6 shots. He also was solid with 4 loose balls in his NLL debut for the Rush.
7. Jarrett Davis, Rochester: Forward played his first NLL game and had 1 goal, 1 assist and 5 loose balls. Showed a ton of hustle for the Birds in the corners.
8. Ben Davies, Colorado: Defenseman took 0 shots and had just 1 loose ball, but the Mammoth did score a nice road win in Calgary.
9. Ryan McCelland, Philadephia: Tranny scooped 2 loose balls in the home loss to Buffalo.
10. Scott Tining, Edmonton: Yes, the F played in 3 games last year for the Rush but by definition, he’s still a rook. He had assists on both of Edmonton’s goals in the 2nd quarter against Boston and scooped a pair of loose balls. His 3 points in 2 games have him ranked 5th in the rookie scoring race.
Honorable mention: Calgary D Dan MacRae had just 1 loose ball in the home loss to Colorado … Boston tranny David Brock had 1 loose ball in the win over Edmonton … Buffalo’s first-round pick, D Travis Irving, has yet to crack the lineup … Several rooks who debuted on opening weekend did not play this past weekend, including Calgary F Brandon Ivey, Colorado F Ned Crotty and Calgary F Derek Hopcroft … Rochester T Josh Ruys had 5 loosies in the loss to Toronto … Calgary D Dayne Michaud scooped a pair of loose balls in the loss to Colorado.
