From Press Release

The Calgary Roughnecks have traded defensive player Paul Dawson to the Philadelphia Wings for a conditional second round draft pick in the 2011 NLL Entry Draft.

The Roughnecks acquired the premier defense player earlier this summer from the Boston Blazers after trading their fourth round pick in the 2011 Entry Draft for his rights. Dawson who qualified as a Restricted Free Agent with the Blazers was also approached by the Toronto Rock.

Brad Banister, President and General Manager says, “We picked up Dawson in a trade earlier this season and it was our intention to keep him here. With his travel schedule, being a fly in, plus the addition of few other tough defenders, Paul became a tradable asset.”

The six foot five Dawson was initially drafted as a goalie in 2006 by San Jose before transitioning into a defender shortly after. Dawson has quickly acquired a name for himself, separate from his brother and former teammate Dan Dawson who was the 2009 MVP of the NLL.

Banister continues, “Next year’s draft is suspected to be really good and this second round draft pick gives us the opportunity to pick up another quality player. We are setting ourselves up to have another superior draft year.”

Dawson will now be one of the highest paid defensemen in the league. In 2010 Dawson scooped up 75 loose balls and tallied six points, plus 65 penalty minutes.
