NLL Entry Draft: Hello My Name Is… Scott Johnston

Burlington Chiefs transition defender and assistant captain Scott Johnston
As we’ve mentioned before on Insider, one of the biggest things that snows fresh National Lacrosse League prospects, even just at their first training camp, is usually the speed and tempo of the game, through the opposition’s wheels and ball movement.
Of the two typical road blocks rookies experience, a lack of speed will not be an issue for Burlington Chiefs two-way defender Scott Johnston, one of the OLA Junior A loop’s quickest, shiftiest and more intelligent up-the-floor defenders, a relentless worker in his own end whose impressive speed allows him to kick-start the Chiefs’ O press too.
In fact, Johnston may be one of the better transitional defenders available in this year’s draft, a draft year loaded with good defensive prospects, the Oakville based two-way threat likely a mid-to-late round sleeper whose style of play is custom made for the NLL’s current game.
While teams fish for non-box Americans who (hopefully) can play relentless, athletic, physical D, nabbing a loosie and shifting gears on the break, Johnston, a box-born Canuck, has already shown he can fill that role beyond a doubt, on box and grass while playing CUFLA ball with Guelph University, a stud middie who helped the Gryphons win a Baggataway Cup during his freshmen year, snapping a Brock University stranglehold on the title, Guelph the only school other than the Badgers to win Canada’s University holy grail over the past eight seasons.

My speed and ability to read plays.

Hard working, physical
What role/position do you see yourself playing in the NLL?
A defensive transition role. Getting the ball up the floor into the O guy’s hands.
What current or former NLLer would you most closely compare or model your game after?
I’d compare myself to players like Steve Toll and Chris Driscoll. Steady transition guys who play solid D.
Your greatest accomplishment during your lacrosse career?

Anything else to add?
I’m available to play in any NLL City.
