NLL Entry Draft: Hello My Name Is… Colin McDowall

OLA Junior A 41-goal scorer, Barrie Lakeshore forward and 2010 pro prospect Colin McDowall.
There hasn’t been a whole lot to cheer about within the Barrie Lakeshores organization in recent seasons.
Between the Senior Lakeshores dropping out of the Major Series Lacrosse loop just days before their first game of the 2010 season and their Junior program missing the playoffs for the ninth straight season (combined with the Orillia Rama Kings previously) this summer, mainstream positives have been tough to come by within the club(s). One positive however, 2010 National Lacrosse League entry draft prospect, Colin McDowall.
While some might try classifying the 5′8″ forward as undersized, they’ve obviously never seen him play, McDowall not afraid to get his hands dirty, going full out for loosies and scoring chances, paying the price regularly which saw him as one of the OLA’s top natural goal scorers this year, his 41-goals ninth best in the province, all players above him in the countdown classified as high profile and playing for playoff bound rosters. He’s just as good, in some cases better, as the more household names that surround him on the scoring charts, so if you don’t know him, learn the name.
As an underaged call-up last year with the Senior Lakeshores, McDowall buried his first MSL goal by current NLL Goalie of the Year Matt Vinc, likely far from his last Major snipe during his upcoming Senior career.
With special teams and power-play scoring dictating success in the NLL for the past several years now, McDowall’s OLA leading 11 PP goals and almost league leading 21 PP points in 2010 should turn heads leading up to next month’s draft.
Drafted ahead of current NLLers like Pete Jacobs (Rochester Knighthawks) and Pat Saunders (Toronto Rock) in ‘06 when taken by the Kings via the Windsor system in the OLA Midget draft, McDowall could (and should) be a decent mid to late round pickup in this year’s pro draft, the Lakeshores scoring leader hungry to land a gig in the NLL on some level, doing whatever is needed to achieve that goal. He’s got sleeper written all over him.
COLIN MCDOWALL

Junior:Orillia Rama Kings/ Barrie Lakeshores
What do you feel your greatest asset is that would allow you to translate your game to the NLL?
My knack for finding the back of the net and I’m willing to learn anything new that a coach has to offer me. I give 100% every time I step onto the floor no matter the way the games going.
What role/position do you see yourself playing in the NLL?
I would like to eventually be a player relied on for scoring goals and setting my teammates up, but any role I’m given I would gladly take.
What current or former NLLer would you most closely compare or model your game after?
I’ve always tried to model my game growing up around players like Colin Doyle and Kaleb Toth but I think my game is more similar to a guy like Jeff Zywicki because he’s not that big of a guy and just has the passion to get whatever needs to be done to put the ball in the back of the net.
Your greatest accomplishment during your lacrosse career?
Getting drafted for Junior A lacrosse, getting an opportunity to play against my lacrosse idol Colin Doyle last season in Major A, and reaching the 40-goal plateau in my final Junior season with the Barrie Lakeshores.
Anything else to add?
I’m willing to move anywhere to play in the NLL.
