From Press Release
The Colorado Mammoth announced today that it has acquired the rights to defenseman and transition player Matt Zash from the Washington Stealth in exchange for the Mammoth’s third-round selection in the 2011 NLL Entry Draft.
The Massapequa, New York native, who was acquired by Washington from the Orlando Titans in the recent dispersal draft, has spent three years in the National Lacrosse League with the Titans organization between New York and Orlando.
“We are excited to showcase Matt’s athleticism in front of 18,000 crazy fans at Pepsi Center this season,” said Mammoth Assistant General Manager Bill Hall. “What we saw in Matt was a versatile, blue-collar player who can mesh well with our goal of getting faster, grittier and more athletic.”
Hall feels that the multi-talented Zash will likely see time as a transition player, but can also play defense. The 26-year-old has a strong and accurate shot, is a loose ball machine, and can even face-off for the Mammoth.
“According to his coach in Orlando, Matt was the best shooter on the team,” said Hall. “He is not a huge guy at 5’11” and 195 pounds, but he plays much bigger than he is.”
Zash recently won a Gold Medal with Team USA in the 2010 FIL World Championships in Manchester, England, and was also a member of the 2007 bronze medal-winning U.S. National indoor team.
The Mammoth also announced today the signings of two additional players – Brad Richardson and Connor Martin. Richardson, a current Mammoth transition player and 2009 draft pick, has resigned with the team for a one-year deal. Martin, a forward, is a former MCLA All-American at Chapman University. He has signed a one-year free agent contract, pending league approval.
