NLL Entry Draft: Hello, My Name Is … Steven Boyle

Steven Boyle can talk to all the coaches and team execs he wants to. But if he’s going to make that leap to the National Lacrosse League, he’s got a fantastic wealth of information to pull from right on his summer sideline. Boyle, the No. 12 overall draft pick by the Boston Cannons in the recent Major League Lacrosse draft, is reunited with former Johns Hopkins teammate Paul Rabil, who knows a thing or two about making the transition to indoor lacrosse. Rabil helped lead the Washington Stealth to the NLL championship just last month, and that’s something Boyle is hoping he can do this coming winter as the attackman eyes the opportunity to play NLL ball.
Boyle learned how to win before he set foot at Hopkins, although there were some tough lessons along the way. A high school star in New Hampshire, his Pinkerton Academy team lost in the state title game 2 times before finally cashing in his senior season. At Hopkins, his rep as a clutch scorer took a seat only to his ability to spot the open teammate and set up goals.
A three-time All-American (honorable mention), Boyle helped the Blue Jays win the 2007 NCAA title game and led the squad back to the title game in 2008, where it lost to Syracuse. This past spring, he was the clear leader on offense with team highs in goals (32), assists (23) and points (55). How that translates to the indoor game remains to be seen but if there’s any attackman out there with the hunger and desire to win, that intangible quality that comes from the heart, it’s Boyle.
