It’s not as though the connection between box lacrosse and hockey is any huge secret. NHL stars like Wayne Gretzky, Joe Nieuwendyk, Adam Oates, Brendan Shanahan and Joe Sakic are among those who fondly recall their days playing summer ball. Today, former Mimico Mountaineer Dave Bolland not only joins that list, he joins it as a Stanley Cup champion. Bolland, who scored 16 points in 22 playoff games in helping the Chicago Blackhawks clinch the Stanley Cup over the Philadelphia Flyers on Wednesday night, played 40 games for the Junior B Mimico Mountaineers in 2001 and 2002. He had 81 career points (33 goals, 48 assists) and averaged 2.03 points per game for the Mountaineers. The Stanley Cup almost never disappoints and this season was no exception. It’s even more special when a laxer gets his hands on that beautiful trophy.Chavez is an avid lacrosse player in Rochester and a journalist for the Democrat and Chronicle as well as a longtime Inside Lacrosse contributor.
