NLL Entry Draft: Hello My Name Is… Garrett Werschke

Calgary Raiders defender Garrett Werschke

A couple weeks back, we mentioned how impressive the crop of draft eligible aggressive,  two-way defenders is this year coming out of the BCJALL leading into the ‘09 National Lacrosse League Entry Draft.

With that said, move a province over, and you’ll find some of the country’s most athletic transition type players anywhere around. Alberta may not have hauled in a Minto yet, but they are producing some great lacrosse players, period, and the theme is definitely guys that can take care of business at either end of the floor.

One of the RMLL’s most impressive D first, two-way capable ball players this year? The Calgary Raiders’ meat and potatoes, hard-nosed defender Garrett Werschke, whose athleticism combined witha balls to the wall work ethic, could see him making some noise on draft day.

GARRETT WERSCHKE

Height: 5′11″
Weight: 195 lbs.
Position: Defender
Shoots: Right
From: Calgary, Alberta
Junior: Calgary Raiders

What do you feel our greatest asset is that would allow you to translate your game to the NLL?
I can play both offence and defence. I am a hard worker, have a good work ethic and am always willing to learn and do new things. I am not afraid to get my nose dirty. I will do anything for anyone on my team at all times and everyone on my team knows that I’ll always be there to cover their back. I might not be a talkative leader on the bench, but my leadership comes on the floor rather than talking.

One (or a couple) word(s) to describe your game?
Hard-nosed and physical.

What role/position do you see yourself playing in the NLL?
I think I would be best suited in the defense/transition role and when given the chance, to run with the ball up the floor.

What current or former NLLer would you most closely compare or model your game after?
Both Andrew McBride and Kaleb Toth. They both play a more physical style of lacrosse and aren’t afraid to get their noses dirty.

Your greatest accomplishment (team or individual) during your college, junior or even senior lacrosse career?
My greatest accomplishment was being in a game seven series with the Jr A Edmonton Miners and going all the way to game seven. Even though we lost I learned a lot from the experience and will never forget it.

Anything else to add?
I have my coaches certification in hockey up to the Junior level. I have assisted in many box and field lacrosse camps during my junior years with the Raiders and I firmly believe in giving back to the youngsters so that they might when they have grown, give back the same way. I have a strong background in athletics and on top of hockey and lacrosse, have played baseball, football and when in high school, was part of the 4×100 gold medal team. My preference would of course be able to play in Calgary as I am currently apprenticing as an Electrical Motor Systems Technician.
