NLL Entry Draft: Hello My Name Is… Brandon Turner

Some of the more impressive Junior to National Lacrosse League jumps over the years have not come from the high profile, high scoring ‘A’ studs coming off a season where they just ignited the loop and murdered the scoring charts.

Not saying those guys don’t or can’t do well, but landing an everyday O spot in the bigs (and do well) coming straight outta Junior is rarely done, especially in recent years. Aren’t a whole lotta Shawn Evans out there.

Some of the biggest impact Juniors we’ve seen crash the pro stage while either still playing Junior ball or just coming outta the league have been names like Jon Harnett, Tyler CodronRory Smith, Kyle Sorenson, Mike Grimes, and other D first guys, whose work ethic and checking usually outweigh their doorstep fakes.

One pro prospect that will be available to NLL GM’s in just over a month and fits the mold of some of the previously mentioned ballers, is recent NLL Insider Defender of the Year nominee, Coquitlam Jr. Adanacs defender, Brandon Turner.

Turner has spent the last couple months playing hard nosed, relentless, smash mouth D for the current number one team in the nation, and brings an attitude and maturity that would no doubt keep NLL teams happy on and off the court.

Although Turner uses other words to describe his game in his NLL Insider draft player profile below, we’d also like to add meat, potatoes and jam to the mix too.

BRANDON TURNER

Height: 5′11″
Weight: 190 lbs.
Position: Defender
Shoots: Left
From: Whitby, Ontario
Junior: Coquitlam Adanacs

What do you feel your greatest asset is that would allow you to translate your game to the NLL?
I’d have to say that my biggest asset would be my ability to read the play and react quickly. Being able to read offensive setups as well as recognize chances to get the ball up the floor on transition would allow me to make the transition to the NLL.

One (or a couple) word(s) to describe your game?
Tenacious, always improving.

What role/position do you see yourself playing in the NLL?
I could see myself as a defensive-transition player, playing sound defense and moving the ball up the floor as quickly as possible.

What current or former NLLer would you most closely compare or model your game after?
I try to add a lot of different elements to my game but if I had to I would say I play a similar style to Ian Hawksbee.

Your greatest accomplishment (team or individual) during your college, junior, or even senior lacrosse career?
I hope that my greatest accomplishment is still ahead of me. With that said, winning back to back BCJALL regular season champions in my final two years of junior is pretty awesome.

Ideal NLL city?
If I had to pick any NLL city it would have to be Toronto. I grew up no more than 15 minutes from the ACC and had the privilege to have seasons tickets with the Rock for all of their Champion’s Cup seasons. Got to see guys like Pat Coyle, Jim Veltman and Bob Watson playing in their prime. Although the opportunity to play in the NLL period would be great in itself.

Anything else to add?
I got to spend two years at The Trinity Pawling School in Pawling, New York. I also got to coach middle school lacrosse while I was there.

With the exception of working construction with my dad, every job I’ve had since I was 13 has been in a lax shop. Worked for The Lax Shack/Proboss Lacrosse for my entire teen-aged life. Once I moved to BC I immediately began working at the local shop, now I work for Chris Levis (Edmonton Rush) at his new shop.
