NLL Insider has learned from a league source that the PLPA has withdrawn their petition on behalf of Brodie Merrill in their search for unrestricted free agency status for the former Portland Lumberjax two-way defender.

Last week, NLL Insider had learned that Merrill, after not receiving payment for an undisclosed sum from his standard player agreement with Portland, was seeking free agency, a similar situation to what occurred during the ‘03 off-season, when former New York Saints players, Gavin Prout, Gee Nash and Derek Suddons, were eventually granted free agency after not receiving outstanding sums from the Saints franchise in a timely manner.

It’s believed that although the situation with Merrill and the three former Saints was similar, they were not identical cases.

It’s unclear at this point what part of Merrill’s contract the unpaid amount stemmed from or how much exactly was owed to the ‘09 transition player of the year.

After being taken first overall in the Portland Lumberjax Dispersal Draft last week, Merrill will now remain property of the Edmonton Rush, who last week officially announced the hiring of former Lumberjax head coach and GM, Derek Keenan.

Last week Keenan told the Edmonton Sun, shortly after drafting Merrill first overall, “One thing about him, is when he comes to camp in November, he’ll be the fittest guy and hardest working guy on the floor and that just raises the level of everybody else.”
