The Toronto Rock have announced that the team’s Director of Lacrosse Operations, Mike Kloepfer, has resigned from his role with the team, just weeks after the Rock failed to qualify for their second straight post-season.
“I would like to thank Mike for his efforts over the past three years,” said Rock President Brad Watters in the team’s press release sent out earlier this morning.
“He has done a commendable job of dealing with our lacrosse operations and the organization wishes Mike well in his future endeavors.”
Kloepfer, who was hired by the franchise in May of 2006, was considered by most outside of the organization as the team’s unofficial general manager, although his title may have suggested otherwise.
The Rock have also announced that at the completion of this year’s post-season, they will begin the interview process to find Kloepfer’s replacement.
“Over the next six weeks we will evaluate the coaching staff and current roles within our lacrosse operations in order for us to return to a leadership position in the league,” Watters added in today’s statement.
Earlier this month, Watters told the Toronto Star that the franchise grossly underachieved and implied that drastic changes could be made after a complete head-to-toe analysis of the team.
It was in mid-January this year that the team fired their entire coaching staff after a disappointing start to the year, gassing head coach Glenn Clark and staff, while hiring current Rock coach, Jamie Batley, for the remainder of the year.
Although Batley has said publicly that he would very much like to remain with the team in 2010, it is unclear at this point what direction the franchise will be taking, likely hinging on who the team hires over the next couple months as their new GM.
“I’d love to be back,” Batley told the Toronto Star shortly after the team’s close-out win over the San Jose Stealth. “As I like to tell everybody, this is the New York Yankees of the NLL and the franchise everybody wants to be a part of.”
