If anything, we’re bummed that Pat Campbell is no longer fighting in this tournament. Not because we’re not happy about Jamie Hackel’s win over the goalie by a vote count of 2,700 to 1,890 in the second semifinal of our National Lacrosse League dream matchups, but because we won’t be able to run that most righteous photo of Campbell duking it out. As it is, we’ve got ourselves an outstanding matchup for the final: It’s Hackel up against Andy Ogilvie, so turn the page, read up and vote for the 2009 champ!
OK, first things first. Let’s revisit Ogilive. What you’re dealing with here is one mean SOB. As one poster over at WingsZone pointed out, fracturing a dude’s skull with one of your punches will give you a rep that’ll last for a long, long time. And when dudes like Pat Coyle are saying Ogie’s one of the toughest guys ever, do you need anymore witnesses? Thing is, there are plenty of them out there and in this tournament alone, Ogilvie cruised through opponents Drew Candy, Geoff Snider and Tim O’Brien to get into this final. Not bad, eh? No, not at all. And as tough as O’Brien and Snider can be, you the voter pushed Ogilvie past those two with ease. Wasn’t even close. So how’s he gonna do throwin’ down against Hackel?
As feared as Ogilvie was, Hackel’s no slouch either. Dude knocked off Scott Evans, Rory Smith and Pat Campbell to get to this final, putting up a tournament-high 2,700 votes to beat the goalie. And the good news is, we were reminded by an anonymous emailer last week that Spikes is still “chuckin’ knuckles” out West with the Langley Thunder. Lucky you, West Coasters. I know a lot of us here out East would love to see his gloves hit the floor again but for now, we’re gonna have to settle for the on-line, virtual battles. Still, it’s not that tough to picture it all in your mind, is it? Would they circle? Feel each other out? Or just go and throw? Fact is, you know some heavy thunder would be flyin’ and you’d be on your feet, screaming your fool head off as these two heavyweights did battle.
Ogilvie? Hackel? It’s up to you, dear voter. Pick your winner and we’ll be back next week to let ya know who the champ is.
